Why Use SLS-Free Shampoo?
We’ve all heard of SLS, haven’t we. Read the back of pretty much any regular shampoo (or bubble bath, liquid soap, face wash, toothpaste and more) and you’ll likely see “Sodium Lauryl Sulphate” (known as SLS) listed in the ingredients.
I’m pleased to say, you won’t find any SLS lurking in any of our products.
What is SLS?
Basically, SLS is a foaming detergent. Meaning it adds froth and bubbles to your shampoo, making it easier to spread through your hair. The detergent part is what actually cleans your hair and scalp. It helps to cut through dirt and oils that build up in your hair, and gives you the squeaky-clean you’ve become accustomed to feeling after washing.
All sounds good, right? Well, not really.
SLS not only gets rid of all the unwanted oils in your hair, but also removes those that are naturally occurring, and which your hair and scalp actually need to stay healthy and nourished. This leads to dry and damaged hair, or oily hair because your scalp overcompensating and producing more oil to replace what’s been stripped away.
Why go SLS-free?
As you might have already gathered, SLS isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, I’d go so far as to say its negative effects far outweigh the positive effect of clean hair.
So what’s the answer? SLS-free shampoo, of course. Here are some of the reasons why…
Retain natural oils
Unlike SLS, the ingredients in our shampoos clean the hair and scalp without stripping the scalp of precious natural oils, meaning your scalp stays healthy and hydrated.
Save money & time
An added bonus to this retention of natural oils is that you may no-longer need to use a hair conditioner. Conditioners are used to add oil and moisture back into the hair as a remedy to the oils that have been stripped away. Because these oils are maintained, you won’t need to use a conditioner to add them back in, so saving you money and time in the shower.
A lot of people will find SLS containing shampoos to be irritating over time, and some people are actually allergic to the ingredient. Your scalp can become itchy, dry, and maybe even painful.
Prolong colour life
SLS can contribute to the stripping away of hair dye pigmentn, causing your colour to fade far quicker. SLS-free shampoos are much gentler, as I mentioned, so won’t strip away your dye. This means you won’t have to re-colour so often and your dye will look fresher and brighter.
Reduce chemical absorption
Anything you put on your skin and hair can be absorbed into your body, so it’s important to avoid substances that can cause harm. This includes SLS. The substance can pass through the membrane of your skin and be absorbed into your liver, and it’s also thought to contain a carcinogen known as 1.4-Dioxane which you definitely don’t want in your body. This is still being tested to be proven, but in my opinion, it’s always better to play it safe and avoid SLS.
There’s more to healthy hair than just the shampoo you use, but if you’re experiencing any of these negative effects from your shampoo, why not try going SLS-free… you might just be amazed!
